Beautiful Maguyuk
Maguyuk is a handsome three-year-old Siberian Husky. He's more than just another pretty face, though--he's also one of the sweetest dogs that i've encountered on my travels through Rogers Park. His name is Inuit for "the howler." I've never heard him utter a single sound--no matter how much my own little dog dances around him in her overly frisky way. But i'm sure that when the situation calls for it, he will voice that otherworldly song for which the breed is noted.

See You Later!
Dear Reader,
I am taking a break from this and my other blogs for the next couple of weeks to focus on personal and professional matters. I hope to return by mid-August. In the meantime, if you don't have a dog, think about adopting one. There are so many dogs (and cats) sitting in shelters hoping for a home.

Oh, the Cuteness!
Watch out, Rogers Park, there's a new puppy in town! And s/he's adorable! This is Clue, a two-month old Shih Tzu-Chichuahua (ShiChi) mix, who somehow ended up looking a lot like a Jack Russell. Although she seems like a quiet little cuddle-bug here with her proud Papa, she's got a big personality and lots of energy. She was having a great time getting to know all the other dogs at Loyola Park this afternoon and collecting smiles from everyone she met.

A Nice Little Dog Looking for a Home
My canine collaborator and i encountered this sweet little American Eskimo Dog on our evening walk. His name is Cubby, and he is currently living with a foster mom in Rogers Park, but he's hoping someone will adopt him soon and give a permanent home. If you are interested in adopting Cubby, please visit the Chicagoland Eskie Rescue website. He's a cute little guy, and i hope he finds a home soon!

Say Hello to Boo!
The dogs of Rogers Park come in all shapes and sizes. Friday's dog was a dainty little Papillon; but "dainty" definitely does not describe today's star. Boo is a 180-pound English Mastiff (with a recessive curly-hair gene). When i met him he was still wet from a nice refreshing dip in the lake; otherwise, i would have found it impossible to resist the temptation to give him a big hug! He's still a pup, only a year and a half old, but very mellow and sweet. I think i'm in love!

Bonjour, Petit Papillon!
This is Trevi, an elegant little Papillon.
I have a special affection for this breed. I always considered myself a big-dog person: little dogs were yappy, spoiled, and not "real" dogs; i thought that if i ever decided to get a dog it would have to be a German Shepherd at the very least, but ideally a Newfoundland or Great Pyrenees -- none of which are practical choices for a person in my circumstances. Then i happened upon a rescue event while visiting a friend in LA and met a Papillon puppy. And i fell in love! I came back to Chicago and couldn't stop thinking about her. I even considered flying back to LA to adopt her, but fortunately she was quickly adopted by someone else. So i started scouring the pet adoption sites in the Chicagoland area for Papillons. I finally went to an adoption event to meet a dog that was described as a "Papillon mix" (though there was a whole lot of something else in that mix) and ended up instead falling for the little dog that is now my best buddy. She's a scruffy little thing of dubious ancestry, but were it not for that first sweet Papillon i don't think i would have ever considered getting a small dog, and would probably still be dithering about whether i really even wanted a dog. Every time i see Trevi, i have to stop to admire those cascading ears, that luxurious tail, that sweet face; then i think of that little Papillon in LA that changed my thinking about small dogs and in the process changed my life.

Annie and Maisie, BFFs
Annie (l.) and Maisie (r.) are neighbors and BFFs who ran into each other on their respective morning walks today. After a few minutes of chasing each other around, they settled down to have their picture taken. Both of these beautiful girls are rescues. There are many more dogs as sweet, loving, and in need of a good home as these two pups, so if you are thinking about getting a dog, please consider adopting from either a local shelter or breed-specific rescue.
